Palacio de la Magdalena

The former summer residence of the Spanish king is now the most beautiful walk in Santander.

On a small peninsula at the entrance to the bay of Santander stands the Palacio de la Magdalena. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century and made available to the royal family as a summer residence. King Alfonso XIII spent many summers here – turning Santander into a popular seaside resort for high society.

The peninsula

A large park open to the public surrounds the palace. A circular path leads past cliffs, small beaches and viewpoints. From here you can look out over the bay, the city and, on clear days, the mountains inland.

At the edge of the peninsula you will also find replicas of the boats in which the sailor Vital Alsar crossed the Atlantic – a small open-air museum.

The palace today

Today the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo uses the palace for summer courses and events. Guided tours of the interior are offered at certain times.

Tip

The walk combines well with the neighbouring El Sardinero beach. In the late afternoon, when the light over the bay softens, the peninsula is especially beautiful – and a great spot for photos.
